MARITIME TRAINING- West African School of Shipping, a key reflection in the maritime industry

 In the space of twelve (12) months, Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) and West African School of Shipping, has  raised the bar high in port and shipping education with branches within west and central Africa countries.

  At the first Anniversary of the Institute of   Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) and Graduation Ceremony of the West Africa School of Shipping, took place on September 5, 2023 at the TDC Towers, Community 2.

  

The ceremony was graced by Head of           public relations at the Ghana Shippers Authority- GSA, maritime law consultant Kofi Mbia, and brought together personals from the Ghana Ports and Habour Authority -GPHA, industry players in the maritime sector, students, individuals, media among others.

In an opening remark by Executive Director of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) Gertrude Adwoa Ohene-Asienim FICS.  is optimistic that the presence of women in the maritime industry will be a facelift in improving maritime and shipping operations. 

 Mad. Asienim was also of the view that, women in maritime should be recognized and applauded for their tremendous effort in capacity building.

‘’women should be applauded for their tremendous effort in the maritime industry seeking to build professionalism in the maritime domain.’’

Over the years entering the maritime industry for women was not easy, as the sector was reserved for men, but a lot has evolved and progressed through the centuries as we now find women establishing themselves and taking up leadership role in the maritime industry.

A total of thirty-Three (33) students graduated from ICS professional exam in foundation Diploma, general knowledge in shipping, port agency, port and terminal management, sea transport in international trade, marine insurance and many others.

Dr. Emmanuel Kofi Mbia, a legal consultant and an icon in the maritime industry over decades, also admonished all members and graduating students to be impactful and go out there to inculcate the education received during their training.

He also congratulated the institution on their one-year anniversary and wishing them the very best in the coming years.

Graduating students received certificate of completion and some selected students were awarded for their exceptional performances.

Students also shared their experience with the audience on how they joined the institution and promise to imbibe into others.
