Earlier this month on 9th November 2023, The President of the Board of Directors of Camões, I.P., Dr. Ana Paula Fernandes, and the Director-General of National Defence Policy, Major General Lemos Pires, paid a visit to participants of the ongoing SWAIMS Project (Support to West Africa Integrated Maritime Security) Training Course.
Within the context of the training module focused on the Operation and Maintenance of semi-rigid inspection boats, taking place at the Nautical Training Center of the Maritime Authority School, Dr Ana Paula Fernandes and Major General Lemos Pires, accompanied by Commodore Cortes Lopes, the General Coordinator of Camões' Implementation Unit for the project, visited the Lighthouse Directorate facilities in Paço D’Arcos.
During this visit, they witnessed the ongoing training processes and extended greetings to the trainees.
The primary objective of this training programme is to impart specific skills to the participants, enabling them to operate semi-rigid inspection boats safely and efficiently across various mission types.
The course encompasses training in techniques related to instruction, maritime search and rescue operations, the operation and maintenance of such vessels, as well as the execution of fisheries inspections and combating maritime crime.
This includes the collection, processing, and preservation of forensic evidence. Upon completion of the course, participants will have the knowledge and qualifications necessary to replicate and sustain the training in their respective countries.
Commencing on September 18 and scheduled to conclude on November 30 at the training facilities of both the Navy and the National Maritime Authority (https://shorturl.at/vzPR4), the Training Course involves the participation of 36 trainees representing 12 coastal countries in the Gulf of Guinea region that benefit from the project (Benin, Cabo Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, the Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea (Conakry), Liberia, Senegal, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Togo).
SWAIMS (Support to West Africa Integrated Maritime Security) is a project of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), funded by the European Union 🇪🇺.
The operational response component of this project is managed and co-financed by Camões – Institute of Cooperation and Language, I.P. It is also co-financed by the Ministry of National Defence through the General Directorate of National Defense Policy and the Navy.
